A re-paint and a re-light
Built in the seventies Yates Associates were invited by Watford Borough Council to undertake the re-lighting of the external areas including the retail canopies, main entrance and precincts. The contract programme and budget was extremely tight, so the design and procurement had to closely dovetail to achieve the end result.
Overall, the existing energy demand was lowered by utilizing led’s and ultra efficient flourescent sources. A theme of blue was filtered into the overall scheme, in particular, the blade light, which highlighted many of the newly painted concrete surfaces. The canopies were transformed with clusters of very modern surface mounted bulkheads which kicked the light in all directions. One particular Mall, which was dangerous to walk along in dark conditions has now become a much safer area, lit from recessed downlights mounted at high level.
The project was completed in 2010.
